Tips for Beginners:
Here are some answers to a few questions you might have before your first yoga class. Hope to see you soon!
Health- Let your teacher know if you have any injuries or specific health conditions (such as muscle strains, chronic aches or pains, high or low blood pressure, or if you’re pregnant). You teacher can help you modify the poses.
Food- It’s best to practice yoga on an empty or near-empty stomach, about two to three hours after a full meal. However, it’s ok to have a light snack an hour before class.
Flexibility- While you might not feel very flexible, yoga is. Poses can be modified to help anyone in any condition. We often use props such as blocks and straps to help people begin to stretch. Tell your teacher it is your first class, they will help you.
Class Level- Beginners are welcome in every class! Open-level classes may be a little more challenging, but our class sizes are small, so your teacher can give you personalized attention and additional support.
Yoga Mats- While we do recommend that you eventually bring your own yoga mat to practice with, we do have studio mats that you can rent for $2. Once you get a class card, you can leave your mat at the studio.
Dress- You can wear any comfortable gym clothes: t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sweatpants, yoga pants, etc. No socks, though. Yoga is practiced in bare feet!
Arrival Time- It’s best to arrive about 10 minutes early so you can get settled before class. If you do arrive late, please wait quietly on the couch until the teacher’s opening talk is over.
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to come to us before, during, or after class, or to email us at info@akashaproject.org. We want to help make your yoga experience a great one.
